An article published by the New York Times in 1934 about the Death Ray claimed that it could bring down up to 10,000 planes from a distance of 400 kilometers. This invention seemed so crazy that even some French newspapers wrote about it at the time.
Tesla envisioned a world where each country was protected by its own Death Ray, making war impossible. He mentioned that his invention had been attempted to be stolen several times, with his apartment being ransacked by thieves or spies. However, they always left empty-handed. He first offered the weapon to the US and British governments, but they did not accept it. He then turned to the Soviets, who allegedly expressed interest in buying it, but no sale was made.

By 1906, most of the site's activities had stopped and employees were dismissed. The building was closed in 1908 and by 1911, the facilities were partially abandoned and began to deteriorate due to a lack of maintenance.
Between 1912 and 1915, Tesla experienced significant financial troubles when investors wanted to know how they would recover their money. The main building was sold and began to crack, and in 1917, the tower was finally destroyed, much to Tesla's dismay. This is the official version of the story, but if you look for information on this tower, some people will give you another version. As I mentioned, the tower was intended to distribute free electricity to the entire globe, which would have been available to everyone. Therefore, the tower offered no possible profitability, and this method would have been extremely dangerous for philanthropists of the time because it could deeply change the energy industry. JP Morgan, who financed this project, had a true empire at the time. He had control over several fields such as steel, railroads, navigation, and electricity, and he knew very well that Tesla's primary motivation was not to make money but to give humanity the means to use unlimited and free energy. Some people believe that JP Morgan stopped financing the project out of fear of seeing his investment in the energy market collapse, but this theory was challenged by Nikola Tesla himself. It is claimed that it had a physiological effect on people subjected to its vibrations, acting as a laxative and causing them to immediately run to the toilet. However, much more destructive and unexpected effects were also observed. In 1935, at an annual meeting of the New York Press, 79-year-old Tesla recounted a story in which he claimed that a version of his mechanical oscillator had caused an earthquake in downtown New York. While experimenting with a small version of his mechanical oscillator in his laboratory in New York, the object generated a resonance in the building. When the speed of the oscillator increased, the resonance spread to the surrounding buildings. Tesla panicked and grabbed a sledgehammer to destroy the object just as the police arrived. He also stated at this meeting that the mechanical oscillator could destroy the Empire State Building if it was attached to a beam of the building.
During the last years of his life, Nikola Tesla lived alone and reclusive in a hotel room in New York. At the age of 81, while on his usual route to Central Park where he would feed the pigeons, he had a bad fall while trying to avoid a taxi. Refusing to consult a doctor or be taken to the hospital, he was returned to his hotel room. However, the inventor never fully recovered from the fall and was left with chronic OCD and insomnia. He died on January 7, 1943, alone in his hotel room, penniless and covered in debt, leaving behind over 300 patents and a reputation as a brilliant scientist. After his passing, several places, objects, and companies were named in honor of Tesla, and he has also been celebrated by national and regional commemorative dates around the world. More recently, Tesla's homeland, Croatia, joined the eurozone on January 1, 2023, and the inventor's profile can be found on the 10, 20, and 50-cent coins.
